Hello, Reese! Missy – excellent topic. 🙂 I agree – I tend to become annoyed when a hearing person come from across the room just to tell me s/he knows signs – but you are right. I should make the small gesture of gratitude. Next time I will try to remember!

Love watching your vlogs! It’s great how people are learning more sign and more about Deaf in general. We had tons of young teens in our beginning class because of Switched at Birth. They thought it was “cool” to learn ASL. Sadly most dropped out, but at least they know more now than they did before!
I completely agree with u…no matter how much knowledge of signs hearing person knows…is greatly appreciated! ! I work as a line food server at university and serve about 1,000 hearing students during lunch period. On my first year, students were awkward with me as well as I was awkward with them. Now my sixth year…they point at food which they want. And more and more students sign ‘thank you’. They feel comfortable with me..few are starting to sign to m e as I teach them. I praise for these hearing students. I’m a retired teacher for deaf and had taught ASL for years.
Hello Missy..your vlog of the Power of Small are really awesome ..I do agree with you 100% about show hearing people a gratitude for know a little sign language…I am with a hearing man for a long time he knows not small but little pretty good sign language since due an injury of his hands…guess what my so called friends even my families doesn’t like him because he doesn’t uses sign language well..He is a great man I ever been going with for many years..He treats me like a Queen or first class lady that no other men can Thanks again for that amazing vlog..
Hi Betty…I cannot help but I find your family and so-called friends for disliking your boyfriend who knows little signs due to his injured hands is unacceptable. Since your partner treats you like a Queen for many years, they should accept and appreciate him for what he is. What a great guy!

I agree 100%. We have to encourage hearing people if they sign. We want them to feel positive about using ASL and communicating with us.

Hey Missy! I really, really love your vlog!! Yes, no matter where I go, every time they sign ‘thank you’, I tend to return them a huge smile! They know that I appreciate it. Now since I live in England where most deaf people are taught to use voices at schools, I keep encouraging them to use signs simply like ‘Thank you’ so in return, those hearing people learn how to sign like that. I guarantee you that those hearing people are hungry to use some signs, rather than listening to ‘deaf’ voices all the time. So I’d love you or someone else to edit your video and spread all over the Britain Sign Language users with subtitles. Pretty please! Many thanks!!

Hi Missy! I’m a 16 year old hearing student and I just wanted to say thank you for making this beautiful vlog! I’m on my 4th year of learning ASL. I started taking ASL because I am in love with both the language and the Deaf culture. Sometimes it feels like some deaf people are annoyed by my efforts to learn ASL… Sometimes, however, people seem happy that I’m interested and dedicated to learning ASL. Those people, people like you, inspire me not only to keep practicing signing but to keep trying in every aspect of life! Thank you again (:

Thank you Missy. I’m a mum and a student of ASL. If I can learn well enough to become an interpreter I want to work in law. I want to help low income mums like me. I recently was divorced and had a hard time figuring out what to do with the court “system.” If I couldn’t hear, well lets just say I could not have done it. It was confusing at best. I learned a lot of what to, and not to, do by chatting with people around the halls etc. I think what if I could not do that!!!
